Dr. Dahlman: I have been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. What is the difference between it and Ulcerative Colitis and are there any natural treatments for it? I am scared to death of the side effects of the medications they want to put me on. Ellen R., Chicago, Ill.
Dear Ellen: Crohn's Disease is an inflammatory and auto-immune condition of the small intestine. Ulcerative Colitis is also inflammatory and auto-immune, but the location of the condition is in the colon (large intestine).
Crohn's Disease symptoms and Ulcerative Colitis symptoms are diarrhea, usually accompanied with blood and mucous in the stool. Other symptoms can include pain, gas, bloating, indigestion, reflux and weight loss. Traditional medical treatment for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis poorly manages these conditions with anti-inflammatory drugs that have unwanted side effects. Continued reliance on this approach may result in further deterioration of the small or large bowel and then require surgery to remove the unhealthiest sections.
Natural Crohn's Disease treatment and Ulcerative Colitis treatment consists of finding the cause of these conditions.
