Type 2 Diabetes
By Dr. David Dahlman, DC ©

Summary: Type 2 Diabetes can be controlled through diet. Usually experienced later in life, traditional medical dietary advice about type 2 diabetes is exactly opposite of what someone suffering from diabetes type 2 should do.

Dr. Dahlman: As a 49 year old female and having been recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, what are the dietary considerations I need to know about to avoid allowing this condition to progress? Mary Ann E., Houston, TX.

Dear Mary Ann: The antique advice given by the American Diabetic Association (ADA) perpetuates the progression of diabetes and, in a word, kills. Diabetics are prone to weight gain, problems with kidneys, nerves (diabetic neuropathy), eyes(diabetic retinopathy), possible amputation and increased risk for the usual end result, heart disease.

The ADA’s misplaced focus on fat consumption forms the basis for their failed dietary advice because they know the average diabetic is at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease and will probably die from it.

Obsolete thought suggests dietary fat intake causes heart disease. There has never been a study proving that heart disease occurs in people who eat a high fat diet in combination with also consuming fewer carbohydrates. Millions are losing weight, regulating blood pressure and cholesterol and also avoiding heart disease through low carbohydrate diets. This same diet is the key to the new, drug free treatment for diabetes. The archaic ADA wants diabetics to limit their fat intake to 30% or less of their diet. This, by definition, requires a diet too high in carbohydrates (no matter if they are high quality carbs) and begins the cascade of health events that include hyperinsulinemia (too much sugar in the bloodstream), high blood pressure, high cholesterol and weight gain around the waist (central obesity). These four conditions make up the medical diagnosis called Metabolic Syndrome (once called Syndrome X or The Deadly Quartet). These four conditions are usually preceed blood sugar regulation problems, diabetes and heart disease.

Type 2 Diabetes is not an inability to produce insulin, it’s insulin resistance. When insulin attaches to a molecule of sugar in order to shuttle it into cells within the body, because the average American diet is so high in carbs and the cells have seen so much sugar, they have become resistant to accepting it (removing it from the blood stream). It’s like having the same friend stop by unannounced every day, sooner or later you’ll stop answering the door. With nowhere to go, the sugar remains in the bloodstream. Doesn’t it make sense that limiting the foods that break down into sugar (carbs) would be the key to the regulation of this condition?

The simple definition of a carbohydrate is anything that’s not an animal product or a fat, oil, nut or butter. The ADA is treating the end result symptom of diabetes (heart disease) with failed advice instead of addressing the cause of the problem by limiting foods that break down into sugar.

No distinction needs to be made between good and bad carbs though it is obviously healthier to eat good carbs (low glycemic index). They all break down into sugar, some more slowly that others, yet all sugar requires insulin to try to find a place for it in the various tissues of the body. The carbohydrates in a candy bar, carrot, fruit, bread or lettuce all break down into the same molecule called glucose.

Two birds can be killed with one stone by lowering carbohydrates and increasing monounsaturated fat intake, especially from fish, olive oil and nuts. If you lower the amount of foods in your diet that break down into sugar, your blood sugar goes down, less insulin will be required and cells around the body will become less resistant to it. Bottom line is if you are diagnosed with diabetes and you follow the ADA diet, you’ll probably die from heart disease. Try Atkin’s, The Zone Diet, South Beach or Suzanne Sommers. Your health might depend on it.
